Bottled Oxygen Safety
From January 1999 Lost & Found Newsletter

From time to time we all need to be reminded that there are reasons for safety rules, even with a benign substance like bottled oxygen. Here's an article that appeared in the August 28 L.A. Times:

Teenage Boy Dies in Hospital Fire. A spark from a defibrillator ignited a fire at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, killing a 14-year-old boy who was being treated for a gunshot wound. Doctors were trying to revive the teen with the defibrillator when a spark apparently caused a supply of oxygen nearby to explode Chicago Police Department spokeswoman Nancy Gorman said. The fire was confined to one room, and hospital employees were able to put out the flames and remove four other young patients from the area.
