Diamond Springs
January 2003

On January 18, 2003, a deaf person failed to return home in Diamond Springs.

SAR 195: My first search ever—and boy was it cold. Three Mounted Team members and two canine handlers searched along Martinez Creek and up the ridges nearby. The only warm spots were where the sun happened to show through the thick tree beds and brush. Local hazards included mine shafts, downed wire fences, and stray dogs in the area. The rescue then became technical due to the steep terrain and the subject's inability to walk—medical issues. The subject was transported to medical care.

SAR 188: This search was announced to the SAR team at the debrief of the Winter SAR-Ex at Ice House Resort. Many of the SAR personnel left the SAR-Ex to head directly to the search. The search efforts continued through the night. The next day mutual aide was called in. This was one of the biggest searches in terms of personnel in recent history.

The subject was located by a Motorcycle Team from Placer County in the Martinez Creek drainage. Due to the steep terrain, the subject was placed in the litter and lowered to the awaiting ambulance by SAR personnel and the Diamond Springs Fire Department.
